Monsieur Hubert Noël isn’t quite what his fifth-grade class expected. First, he gives all his students a book of coupons as a gift: one coupon for sleeping late, one for lost work, one for cheating, and more of the same. At first the students use them, but it’s not until they realize that Monsieur Noël is giving them more important gifts for free — books read aloud, a whole year of lessons, and out-of-the-ordinary field trips — that they stop clipping coupons. This book about a quirky teacher in an unconventional school will teach readers a lesson about one of life’s most precious gifts — the love of learning.

It isn’t that Abby Carson can’t do her schoolwork, it’s just that she doesn’t like doing it. And that means she’s pretty much failing sixth grade. When a warning letter is sent home, Abby realizes that all her slacking off could cause her to be held back — for real! Unless she wants to repeat the sixth grade, she’ll have to meet some specific conditions, including taking on an extra-credit project: find a pen pal in a foreign country. Simple enough (even for a girl who hates homework).

Abby’s first letter arrives at a small school in Afghanistan, and Sadeed Bayat is chosen to be her pen pal…. Well, kind of. He is the best writer, but he is also a boy, and in his village it is not appropriate for a boy to correspond with a girl. So his younger sister dictates and signs the letter. Until Sadeed decides what his sister is telling Abby isn’t what he’d like Abby to know.

As letters flow back and forth between Illinois and Afghanistan, Abby and Sadeed discover that their letters are crossing more than an ocean. They are crossing a huge cultural divide and a minefield of different lifestyles and traditions. Their growing friendship is also becoming a growing problem for both communities, and some people are not happy. Suddenly things are not so simple.

What happens to a class when the substitute teacher fails to show up? Mr. Fabian’s sixth-grade class goes solo for the day. They run the class themselves according to the routine established by their well-liked teacher. They do relatively well until a fight breaks out between two students over the death of a classmate, Tommy, who died six months earlier. Because of this fight, students start to deal with their guilt and sorrow over their classmate’s death. Fletcher balances a wide variety of emotions so the story is at times sad, funny, and profound.

Here is some of the stuff I wrote about:
Bus rules, carpools, how to stay out of trouble (possibly), homework, fun work, water fountains, friends (plus children you may not actually care for).

All the helpful hints and drawings are done by me, Junie B. Jones! Plus also, there are stickers and pages for you to write in! This thing is a hoot, I tell you!

But after a couple of days of effort, Patsy throws up her arms. What she fears will be a disaster, however, ends up being a big success. The night of Open House, Miss Klingensmith’s students turn into angels with model manners. Although this is a book about manners, it isn’t your usual “please” and “thank you” version. Patsy teaches the students about meeting and greeting guests, introducing themselves and others, serving refreshments, and making conversation.

By exaggerating the seriousness of testing Finchler creates a hilarious story. Amusing illustrations and funny speech balloons add to the entertainment. Use as a read-aloud in the midst of test preparations to break up tension for both you and students!

Before school, Horace finds a small toy truck on the playground and keeps it. When he plays with the truck during snack time, a classmate, Walter, yells that the truck is his. Horace lies to his teacher. That night he also lies to his mother. After a troubled night, Horace is too “sick” to go to school. He receives get-well letters from his classmates — even one from Walter. Walter offers Horace an opportunity to return the truck with no hard feelings. This important topic, not often found in picture books, is handled sensitively. This book naturally opens discussion about how it feels to make a bad choice and why one bad choice can lead to others. More importantly, it deals with forgiveness and positive ways to handle a mistake.
